How to make a perfect Matcha Latte

Totale tijd: 5 minuten

Matcha is usually loved as a latte, but it’s also one of those ingredients that can turn a simple daily habit into something that feels intentional. In Japan, there are matcha makers and tea masters who dedicate their lives to growing, stone-grinding, preparing, and serving it with incredible precision. We’re not trying to compete with that. This is the home-kitchen version, made for real life, but it can still give you a small moment of calm while you make it.

Why matcha is considered “healthy” (what it does in the body)

Matcha is powdered green tea, which means you’re consuming the whole leaf rather than steeping and removing it. That’s why it’s naturally rich in plant compounds, especially catechins (like EGCG), which act as antioxidants. Antioxidants help neutralize free radicals, which can support overall cellular health.

Matcha also contains L-theanine, an amino acid that’s known for supporting a calm, focused feeling. Combined with matcha’s natural caffeine, many people experience a steadier energy compared to coffee, because L-theanine can take the “edge” off and reduce the jittery feeling. In simple terms: you often get alertness + calm at the same time, which is exactly what most of us want in the morning.

A small ritual: how matcha is traditionally prepared (and why it matters)

If you want the latte to taste smooth (not bitter, not grainy), the preparation matters more than the ingredients list. Traditional tools help, but you can still use the method even without all of them:

  • Chawan (茶碗) – the matcha bowl
Wide enough to whisk properly, and deep enough to keep the tea from splashing.
  • Chasen (茶筅) – the bamboo whisk
Designed to break up tiny clumps and create a light foam. This changes the mouthfeel a lot.
  • Chashaku (茶杓) – the bamboo scoop
Used to measure matcha in a consistent way (and it looks beautiful, honestly).
  • Furui (ふるい) – a small sieve
This step is underrated. Sifting is one of the biggest upgrades you can make at home.

Tips that make a real difference (not the obvious ones)

  • Always sift your matcha (furui). Matcha clumps easily because it’s ultra-fine and static-y. If you skip this, you’ll chase lumps forever.
  • Use hot water, not boiling (around 80°C / 175°F). Too hot can pull out more bitterness and dull the “fresh” flavor.
  • Make a paste first: after sifting, add a tiny splash of water and stir into a smooth paste before adding the rest. This is the fastest way to avoid clumps.
  • Whisk in a zig-zag (M/W motion), not circles. Circles tend to push clumps around instead of breaking them down.
  • Don’t grind the whisk into the bottom. Let the tips do the work. If you press hard, the chasen breaks faster and you get less foam.
  • Foam trick: at the end, whisk a little closer to the surface to pull in air and create a finer foam.
  • Check your whisk: if you see green clumps stuck in the chasen, keep whisking a bit longer or add a few drops of water and go again.

Why this latte works so well

This matcha latte is simple, creamy, and energizing without feeling heavy. It can be your quick morning drink, but it can also be a tiny pause: sift, whisk, breathe, pour. A small kitchen ritual that helps you start the day feeling a bit more steady.

Instructions

  1. Sift the matcha powder into a bowl to remove any clumps.
  2. Use a the traditional bamboo matcha whisk, or "chasen".

  3. Add the hot water and whisk vigorously in a zig-zag motion until the matcha is fully dissolved and slightly frothy. Don't push your chasen to the bottom of the bowl, but just slightly touch. To create more foam bring your chasen up, towards the surface, at the end. Check if there are no lumps left on the chasen. Otherwise keep wisking.

  4. Heat and froth your milk of choice.
  5. Pour the frothed milk over the matcha mixture (or the other way around ;)
  6. Add sweetener if desired, and enjoy your perfect matcha latte!
